OKC Energy FC’s assistant coach dismissed due to U.K. murder charge

OKC Energy Football Club (FC) assistant coach Christopher Spendlove was dismissed from the team today due to  murder charges issued in Liverpool, England. The 30 year old Liverpool native was visiting home for the holidays. In a statement on the team’s website (energyfc.com), the team’s general manager Jason Hawkins expressed shock and sadness at this turn of events.

“We are deeply saddened by the news of the incident and our hearts go out to the family of the police officer who lost his life. We are also disheartened for Chris. As an assistant coach, he was always professional and conducted himself in a proper and respectful manner,” Hawkins said in the press release.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) website states Spendlove and Andrew Taylor are charged with murder. The victim is an off-duty police constable (Pc) named Neil Doyle, a 10-year veteran of the force. Doyle, along with two other off-duty police constables were involved in an assault outside the Aloha Nightclub in Liverpool. Police were to called to the scene, where paramedics, the club doorman and his fellow off-duty police officers were unable to save Doyle’s life. The pc suffered serious injuries in the attack which proved fatal. The attack happened Friday night.

Spendlove and Taylor were charged earlier today when the constable succumbed to his injuries. The autopsy revealed that he died of internal cranial bleeding. The men will appear before a Liverpool court tomorrow, answering to charges of grievous bodily harm and murder.

The Energy released the statement this afternoon explaining “due to the seriousness of the charges” he is released, and expressing support for Spendlove and his family during this time. The full statement is on energyfc.com.
